China's towering mountain ranges cover two-thirds of the country, including the Himalayas, which hold the world's tallest peaks along the country's western borders. These are the highest mountains in the world. They provided a nearly impassable border for Ancient China, keeping the area isolated from many other (Western) civilisations. They were also important to Chinese religion and were considered sacred.
