Explain the controversersy beteween russia and chechnya

The conflict between Russia and Chechnya began 20 years ago when Chechnya located in Russia's North Caucasus region that had announced its independence. This attempt of separation from the union has started the war killing many nationals. As of writing, Chechnya is a de facto independent state while being formally part of Russia.
