Commercial fishing is important to the economies of both states

    Explanation:

Alaska and Hawaii are both federal states in the United States. Both of them are not connected to the mainland United States.

Alaska is a state dominated by high mountains and very harsh climate, which makes lot of difficulties for any activities to be taking place in its interior. There is a very long coastline though, and the waters near it are very high in nutrients. Because there are lot of nutrients, the water is very rich with fish, so the people living in Alaska have focused primarily on the fishing, becoming one of the major driving forces of its economy.

Hawaii is an island state, consisted of several volcanic islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. As any island state or nation, Hawaii understandably has been relying heavily on fishing, be it throughout its history or at the present. The waters around the islands are very rich in fish, both in speciation and in quantity, so naturally the people have been exploiting the ocean and what it has to offer them.
