    When tectonic plates move apart, or diverge, you usually get rifts, which eventually become rift valleys. Most of the active divergent boundaries are with oceanic plates, leading to mid-oceanic ridges such as the mid Atlantic ridge, which is part of the longest mountain range on the planet.
