    As the sum is G type main sequence which comprises of about 99.8 % of its mass, for it to become a neutron star it needs to have a mass of 10 to 29 solar masses i. e 8 times more brighter than the other stars. So it will take about 5 billion years for the sun to become a red giant and conditions needed for the formation of neutron star should be supernova in nature.
