Because of his wise and skillful leadership, the economy of Athens thrived and the government became more democratic. Why is Athen's system of government described as a "direct democracy" as opposed to an "indirect democracy?' Athens system of government is described as a direct democracy as not just citizens can participate in government. While in an indirect democracy ONLY citizens of Athens could participate in government.
