The convergence of surface winds and warmer ocean temperatures trigger the formation of tropical thunderstorms. The easterly trade winds meet near the equator. This causes the formation of many thunderstorms in the Intertropical convergence zone. Storms will break away from this zone and continue to grow as travel.
