    The Union was able to successfully create the blockade of most Southern ports; built ironclads to maintain the naval blockade

    Captured New Orleans and had victories in Kentucky and Tennessee; captured Vicksburg; controlled the Mississippi River

    Attempted to capture Richmond during the Battle of Bull Run but failed. Was later able to capture Richmond which led to the end of the war
