    Answer: As they left, the Iraqi troops blew up or damaged more than 700 Kuwaiti oil wells. Most of the oil wells caught fire. The troops also spilled oil from ships into the Persian Gulf. The majority of the world's oil is transported through this body of water. Scientists estimate that 1 to 1.5 billion barrels of oil were released into the environment. (A barrel of oil contains 42 gallons, or 159 liters.) This oil spill was one of the worst in human history. Its effects are long-lasting. This is partly because the waters of the Persian Gulf take hundreds of years to renew.

Green building is a trend that is here to stay. Buildings that are "green" also have reduced operating costs.
