The answer is a. They emit more carbon than they take in.

The carbon sinks represent a natural or artificial reservoirs that are accumulating and storing some chemical compounds that contain carbon for an indefinite period. The process by which carbon sinks (both natural and artificial) are removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is called carbon sequestration. The biggest natural carbon sinks are the ocean, plants, and soil. The ocean contain huge amounts of carbon dioxide, the plants use it for the photosynthesis process, while the soil gets from the dead decomposing plants.
