Why might the Atlantic Ocean have appeared to shrink in the late 1930s?

The time between 1933 and 1934, the Atlantic ocean experienced its highest temperature in history. This phenomenon cause shrinking of the water of the Atlantic ocean. The atlantic ocean is getting bigger while the pacific ocean is shrinking.
