Why might a country want to hide or distort negative details about foreign conflicts

A country might want to hide or distort negative details about foreign conflicts to make sure that they can make a deal or contract with another country if thus treaty/contract does not work. Another reason, is to make more allies that are not familiar with how they do businesses.
