Sharecropping as a form of agriculture in which a landowner needed an amount of land to an individual who can work the land in exchange for a share of its crops. It was the predominant form of agriculture during the great depression at the beginning of the 20th century.

The use of the system came to an end with the introduction of mechanical innovations in agriculture, which became much more efficient options for the landowners in comparison to having sharecroppers work the land. As a result, former sharecroppers decided to move to the cities to get jobs at manufacturing complexes.
