Gandhi did not want to "drive away" the English so much as he wanted India to peacefully gain its independence from foreign rule. Gandhi wanted to gain independence for two main reasons:
Independence from oppression of basic human rights. (The British exercised strict economic and political rule on India)
Equality for all Indian citizens regardless of religion, etc. (There was a lot of unrest due to the Hindu caste system. The British did not respect the religious diversity of India.)
