    There were several factors that lead to the public generally feeling demoralized in the 1800s including:

    1. Systematic corruption: The time was marked by a huge amount of corruption in the government which made many people feel like the country was ignoring them.

    2. Rampant Racism: Racism was enshrined in the government and it was not easy for a black person, an Asian or even a new immigrant from Europe to assimilate in the country.

    3. Poor Farmers: Rising transport costs, over production and droughts had forced many farmers to take loans and go into heavy debt. A large part of the south was rural and people were suffering
