How did sheridan and sherman use total war to destroy the south's ability to fight?

    The concept of total war revolves around destroying almost everything possible in order to weaken your opponent. During the Civil War, Sheridan and Sherman used total war by:

    1) Destroying railroad tracks - This would make it much more difficult for the Confederate army to move supplies and troops.

    2) Burning farms/crops - This would ruin the soil/farms and would also result in less food for the Confederate war effort.
