Humphrey was formerly a United States Senator from Minnesota and served as Vice-President from 1964 to 1969. In addition to the refusal of Lyndon Johnson to run for the presidency in 1968 and the political assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr, Humphrey struggled to unite the party and to disassociate himself from Lyndon Johnson.
