Answer: After three months of fierce fighting, the Japanese defeated the U. S. and Filipino army at the Battle of Bataan. On April 9, 1942, General Edward King, Jr. surrendered to the Japanese.

Many prisoners had died because of their cruel and brutal conditions and punishments. This was a result of Japanese leaders not preparing properly for the number if prisoners they had to take in.
