Why did it take so long to ratify the articles of confederation

    Because they did not want to give up certain powers, especially if something that disadvantaged them would advantage another state. The interest they had in joining together had to be balanced against the separate and sometimes conflicting interests of the residents of the various different states. They all wanted the pie, but differed on how it should be sliced up.
