Cheaper methods of production are more harmful to the environment.

If a company wants to make money at the highest levels they will forego the environmental protections on their factories or transportation because it cost more money. For example factories to be environmentally friendly need to put filters and special air purifying machines within the factory. With the introduction of the EPA in the 1970s, many companies began moving factories to other countries so they did not have to incur the expense of modifying their factories for environmental standards.

That is because environmental issues are usually expensive in the short term and nobody wants to risk their money in such investments. It is economically inefficient to pursue environmental interests so many just opt to pursue personal wealth.
