It is one of the megalithic monuments because it is made of enormous stone blocks. Today it is thought that the Neolithic peoples of the British Isles began the construction of Stonehenge 5000 years ago. Archaeological excavations that started in the mid-20th century showed that the monument was built in three stages. There are more than 1000 stone circles in the British Isles, but Stonehenge is unique among them. Stonehenge is believed to be a product of people's religious beliefs and dedicated to the cult of the sun.
