Many Europeans moved to the United States beginning in the 1880s. Many Italian immigrants chose to stay on the Atlantic Coast since they had no money to go farther. Others pushed on to the West. Much of the farmland had already been claimed in the middle of the country. So, many Italians started farms in California. Here the warm weather, rich soil, and coastal landscape reminded them of their home back in Italy. Many decided to stay and raise their families.

Why did the physical features of California attract Italian immigrants?

A.

The dry desert and cacti were familiar to them.

B.

The grassy plains were like the landscape of Italy.

C.

The warm weather and rich soil reminded them of home.

D.

The bitter, cold winters reminded them of winters in Italy.
