The separation of Berlin started in 1945 after the fall of Germany. The nation was partitioned into four zones, where every superpower controlled a zone. In 1946, reparation understandings separated between the Soviet and Western zones.

The West needed to resuscitate the German economy and join the three western zones into one region.
