What factor contributed to the destruction of the southern buffalo herds?

    The construction of the Kansas division of the Union Pacific Railway from the Missouri River westward across Kansas, and through the heart of the southern buffalo range, and as soon as the railways crossed the buffalo country, the slaughter began and more poachers entered the areas the herds occupied.
