    The correct answer is Sugar Act. The Sugar Act was passed in parliament on April 5, 1764. The reason the British had to tax the American colonists was because of the debt they accumulated fighting in the French and Indian War. Since the British government felt that they were protecting the American colonists in this fight, they thought it was only fair that the colonists pay their fair share. This would be the beginning of a series of taxes that resulted in America declaring independence from Great Britain.
