After gaining its independence from Spain in the early 19th century, Mexico gave land grants to ranchos in California. These were given to men who would use this land for raising sheep and cattle. These were huge plots of land, usually around 14 square miles big. This allowed men to provide for their families and contribute valuable resources to the Mexican citizens.
