What hardened colonists' attitudes toward local American Indians in Virginia during the early 1600s?

    Colonists did not understand the local Native Americans’ way of life and this led to distrust and fear. The foundation of this was prejudice and racism. Despite this, the initial response to settlers was amicable in the early 1600s, until it deteriorated because of the colonists’ behaviour.
