Why were medieval manors nearly self-sufficient? Slaves were brought in to run the manor efficiently. Nobles allowed serfs to earn freedom as long as the manor ran smoothly. The establishment of a middle class provided a stable economy and thus little direction was needed. It was not necessary to hire anyone on the manor and most of the materials needed were on the premises.
