In the 1950's and 1960's it was a time of considerable prosperity and the standard of living improved for many Americans. Also, demographically, the baby-boomers or a large increase in births from the troops coming home had a big influence on life in the US. Many of these youth developed a counter-culture and also took part in demonstrations against the war in Vietnam and the civil rights movement. Now, in 2017, baby boomers are utilizing the medical system more and more as they age so putting pressure on it.
