Giovanni da Verrazano explored the land around present-day New York (B).

He was an Italian explorer who explored the Atlantic coast between North Carolina and Newfoundland in the North. He was born in 1485, in a village thirty miles south of Florence. He pursued a maritime career and was sent by King Francis I of France to explore the east coast of North America with the aim of finding a route to the Pacific. He landed at Cape Fear, North Carolina. From there he went north on an exploratory journey. His discovery of New York harbour formed part of his first journey of explorations.
