The Portuguese captain, at the Spanish Crown's service, who staged and led the expedition to circumnavigate the globe for the first time was Ferdinand Magellan. However, he died after sailing half the distance. His boatswain (petty officer), Spaniard Sebastian Elcano, would then take over command, resume the expedition and bring it to its successful conclusion.
