    After the plague/black death labour became scarce and landlords needed peasants to tend cattle and sheep or get involved in farming and agriculture. Quite often the only way to get people to work for them was to offer higher wages than their current landlords were offering. In some cases the landlords were happy to let their peasants go - some forms of farming - eg sheep rearing was less labour intensive and it allowed them to clear land for sheep. Much agriculture in the medieval era was

    subsistence based and consequently there was little profit, especially in lean years. Sheep farming offered more profits.
