What were the living conditions of many immigrants who lived in cities

It was not like living in mansions, condominium's, or anything. These tenements were for poor immigrants that just came to the United States to start a better life. These tenements were overcrowded, unsanitary, and unsafe housing. At least 18 people lived in one tenement apartment. They moved into poverty stricken neighborhoods and into neglected buildings known as tenements, which are "multifamily dwellings with several apartment-like living quarters". Tenements were most common in the Lower East Side of New York City, the area in which a majority of immigrants found themselves settling in.
