How was the south able to subjugate african americans after the civil war and bring about an end to reconstruction?

There were things called "Black Codes" that basically made African Americans work in poor jobs, live in poverty, didn't allow them to vote, and kept the hatred of those in color in motion until the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's
