in the American civil war Confederate Robert E. Lee attempted to invade the north twice, both times he was repulsed. what where the two battles, the years, the states, the outcome.

    1. Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862, Southern army was pushed back with great losses (some historians say it was a stalemate because the North also suffered important losses).

    2. Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863, defeat of Confederate army with heavy losses. The South lost the strategic initiative utterly.
