In November 2012, more than 40 percent of poll respondents were Democrats.

    Explanation:

The Democratic Party has majority support from university students and liberal professionals who define themselves as 72% progressives versus 15% conservatives. The scientists declare themselves 55% Democratic, 32% independent and 6% Republican according to the Washington Post, young people also tend to vote Democratic, and since the election of Bill Clinton in 1992 young voters have supported all the Democratic candidates. 44% of voters between 18 and 29 voted for John Kerry while 56% voted for Barack Obama.

Another sector of the population that traditionally votes for the Democrats is the working class, the unionized and low-income workers. Since 1930 the Democratic Party has a close link with the unions which in turn exert an influential pressure and are capable of strong electoral mobilization. According to CNN surveys, most of the lower class citizens with low socioeconomic income, as well as workers without university degrees, tend to vote for the Democrats, even though the democratic working class sectors tend to be socially more conservative than the intellectual base, professional and university liberal tendencies that also vote for the democrats. 41% of women identify as Democrats and 25% as Republicans.
