Why did Harry Truman decide to drop the atomic bomb on Japan?

Atomic bombs had not yet been tested, and he wanted to find out how powerful they were.

Advisers misled him to believe that the atomic bomb was much safer than other weapons of the day.

He thought that far fewer people would die from an atomic bomb than from a military invasion of Japan.

He thought if he destroyed Tokyo with an atomic bomb, Japan would surrender.
