Narratives and counterstories are important as a way of showing the reality of racial oppression and to give opportunity for persons of color to share their experiences. Inclusion of such stories serves as a counterbalance to the structural patterns that give priority to the narrative and dominance of white society.

Critical Race Theory developed from scholars in the legal field. One of its key assertions is that white power has been maintained over time through the patterns that hold sway in social and political life, and particularly so through the laws of the land. Critical Race theorists challenge the idea that America is truly a place of liberty and justice for all. They argue that the law tends to be structured in a way that favors those who already have power, which has meant a predominance of favoring the interests of white persons over persons of color.
