To represent their interests in government.

The other answers are not entirely wrong. The people of the country do have an interest in economic success, and will look for their representatives to do what's good for the economy. A campaign chairman for a presidential campaign once coined the slogan, "It's the economy, stupid" - - meaning that's what people care about the most. But ultimately voters are looking for more than just economic policies from those who govern. And while they might like government representatives to get rid of policies they don't like and favor policies they do like, doing both of those things is covered under the idea of "representing the voters' interests in government."
