How did the arms race and scientific competition contribute to the continuation of the Cold War?

Because of the arms race and the scientific competition between the U. S and Russia, both countries started missal programs and both hand nuclear capabilities until the Berlin wall came down and the iron curtain was lifted then the cold war was ended.
