China's handling of the Tiananmen Square protests increased tensions between that country and the United States

    Explanation:

The way in which the Tiananmen Square protests were handled by the Communist Chinese Government was one of the reasons in the past for their tainted relationship.

Most of the western countries along with the Chinese youths studying there, condemned thus act of Chinese Government while many and almost all of the Asian countries supported this act of Chinese Government. This alleged unethical way of treating the protest was one of the main reason for their thin relationship in the past.
