Slaves were denied the ability to read and write because in a way, they would become smarter. There was the fear of an educated black man. Ideas are a powerful thing and it would make them feel inferior to slaves. This, of course, shows the ignorance of white people at that time. In their minds, a slave would rise up against their masters if they were any smarter than they already were.

They assumed that slaves had no use for reading in their daily lives, and that literacy would make them more difficult to control, and more likely to run away.
