During the dark ages of Medieval times, Feudalism led to the shift in power dynamics in that the Nobles of the time starting to lose power that was gained by the Kings at the same time that the Catholic Pope also gained power and influence over the kingdoms. The feudal landlords started to negotiate with the kings and pledge allegiance to them in exchange for protection. The Kings exerted absolute power and dominion over the reign. However, as the Pope also increased power through religion, it conflicted with the power of the Kings.
