    It was an agreement between the Puritans and the nonPuritans who had come on the Mayflower to establish a government together and to follow whatever laws that government made. It’s sometimes called the birth of representative government in the colonies, but Jamestown, Virginia, under its 1619 charter from the king, already had an elected house of burgesses governing it.

    The Mayflower Compact was the first agreement for self-government to be created and enforced in America. Pilgrims, aboard sailed from Plymouth, England. They were bound for the New World.
