The correct answer is that he was key to spreading it across India by issuing the Edicts of Ashoka. The Edicts of Ashoka are the first tangible evidence of the spread of Buddhism in the modern-day state of India. Ashoka became a devout Buddhist, after converting to Hinduism. He was a very violent ruler and decided he wanted to take on a more pacific approach to ruling and converted to Buddhism. He routinely encouraged his people to become Buddhists and because of the Edicts, many different types of Buddhism were formed.
