    Democrats hosted mass rallies, parades, and barbecues to star up popular support and also to foster intense party loyalty. In both periods there was a high voter turn out often between 80-90 percent and there was fierce competition with the republicans over economic ideologies with democrats favoring free trade while the republicans favored protectionist policies.
