Indian art before 1900 was generally vibrant and depicted various scenes of Indian life. They typically showed the incorporation of the kingdom, court scenes, and India's flora and fauna. However, when India became under the British colonial rule, Indian art suffered from the suppression of its nationalism and identity. The art style the British promoted was romanticized, as patterned to the style of the West.

In 1905, the Swadeshi Movement was established to bring back the nationalism and cultural identity of India into its artworks. This gave birth to the Bengal School of Art.
