Hammurabi's code was the first written legal code and was issued by the king Hammurabi. He ruled Babylonia from 1792 to 1750 BC. He expanded Babylon and united the southern Mesopotamia. Hammurabi's code of laws consists of 282 rules. It set fines and punishments for justice and standardized commercial interactions. His code was carved on a black stone pillar. The pillar was rediscovered in 1901. It was carved from a single four-ton slab of diorite. This code is one of the best examples of the doctrine of lex talionis (An eye for an eye). the main purpose of the Code of Hammurabi was to use the political power to create common bonds among the diverse people of the society.
