"Citizens agree to obey their government in return for protection of their natural rights."

John Locke believed that citizens give up some of their freedom in return for the collective protection of natural rights. This influenced thinkers such as Thomas Jefferson as he considered what the American colonies relationship with the British Crown should be and what the British Crown ought to be doing in return for its citizens in the colonies.
