The First Barbary War was an undeclared war pursued by the United States against the North African conditions of Morocco, Tripoli, Algiers, and Tunis. The rule reason for the war was that those states harbored and bolstered the activities of privateers against American transportation vessels in the Mediterranean Sea.

In March 1801, Jefferson requested a squadron driven by Commodore Richard Dale to bar Tripoli and to assault any meddling Barbary transport. Andrew Sterret, commander of the Enterprise, won the principal American triumph of the war. On August 1, 1801, Sterret caught Rais Mahomet Rous' 14-firearm corsair Tripoli.

The reason for the U. S. support was privateers from the Barbary States seizing American shipper ships and holding the teams for payoff, requesting the U. S. pay tribute to the Barbary rulers. Joined States President Thomas Jefferson would not pay this tribute. Sweden had been at war with the Tripolitans since 1800.
